The boys all seemed to arrive, conveniently, at their rendezvous point near the same time. They met at the empty field on the corner of Lookabout Rd. and Qual St., just two blocks from their intended and much anticipated destination. The bikes were left in the tall weeds, and they walked the rest of the way. They stood on the bottom of the tall and slanted driveway, and gazed upon the O’Donnell house, its chipped paint of evergreen glowed in the midst of the salmon colored cubes that fouled the neighborhood. Cameron and Josiah volunteered to go in first, Josiah claiming to have gone in last summer with his older brother. Stevie, who was Mason’s cousin visiting from Bakersfield, suggested that they go in through the back as to not arouse suspicion. None of the boys liked Stevie, and in front of his friends Mason would act the same way. Yet, as vexing as Stevie was, they felt he was right and moved towards the back gate. Cameron unlocked the rusted latch, and pulled the corroded gate back for Josiah to enter first. Cameron followed, then Aaron, then Mason, then Stevie. They managed to find concrete steeping stones that guided them through the overgrown backyard, and to a set of crumbling stairs that lead to a decaying patio; insects and time having long chewed it from end to end. The stairs creaked and howled as the boys climbed, hushing each other along the way. The patio would violently shake each time any of the boys would move, as if it were a dog trying to dry itself. At long last, they made their way to the sliding glass door at the end, and with bated breath they began negotiating who would be the first to enter. First, they suggested Josiah, who declined without giving a reason. Without words, it seemed the group had made a decision, and nominated Stevie on the notion that he had suggested going through the back to begin with, something they claimed had almost killed them. Through the miracles of peer pressure, Stevie slid open the door, and all that glass and metal that hadn’t been moved in years screamed. Stevie peered his head in...
